Darknight
Awesome debut album from the band I've fallen in love with, it's all the sick dissonant riffs and the sludgy feel to it, MAERE create a killer death metal vibe soaked in darkness and its the aspect of really clever songwriting that I love about this awesome band. Can't get enough of these six deathly tracks.
Favorite track: I Descend.

Excellent, dissonant death metal. Slows down to a sludge-like crawl routinely. When it does, it sounds particularly sickening. Nice heavy sound. You know that this band could easily up the technicality, but they focussed on making good songs instead that affect you emotionally.

Mære's six songs debut material, entitled "I", brings us a manifest of dinkum Death Metal obscurity: Old school in its core, contemporary in its vision.
The intense, daunting bleakness pouring from the soundwaves of "I" does feel like freezing magma. Moving and paralyzing in one fascinating phase. As Mære are progressing forward with each track, toying behind the shadows with the shadows, the rhythms spread wider and the riffs cut deeper. At the same time, the force of resounding dissonance and elaborate riffs' composition becomes sense–strangulating, ever consuming...transcendental fire of art.
Exceptional debut.
Hint: Imagine Ulcerate, Phobocosm, Altars and Neurosis crushing into an unique, blackened entity.
Side note: Mære was formed by three ex-members of Ingurgitating Oblivion in order to follow their own vision of Death Metal.
The CD version comes in a transparent jewelcase including full colored, 12 sided booklet. The disc is a black polycarbonate one. Don't miss this edition out.

True pain masters must spend years learning how to execute it effectively. It’s worth it. When it’s right, few riffs are better. So, it’s a little surprising that Mære, a new quintet debuting on the reliable Lavadome Productions, is already trudging upright, eyes set on scaling the twisted-iron mountain that’s dissonant death metal. However, the fast start makes sense given the players.

I is one of the more unique and intriguing death metal releases that I have heard, and changing the formula isn’t always something that works out in the favor of the band, but it certainly does here for Mære.

The atmosphere the band conveys here is similar to old-school MORBID ANGEL or even latter-day NILE. The sound is sludgy, dirty and just plain overwhelming (in the positive way). The riffs are designed in a way where it sucks you in and just leaves you in a trance, the best comparison would be NEUROSIS, the ultimate masters and pioneer of the post-metal genre.

The fusion of death metal and a touch of drone/doom, is put together very well. They keep things interesting in a genre that has exhausted many ideas. Between atmospheric drawn out fuzz, and speedy riffs, they combine two different ways of going about death metal in a clever way.

That bleak, hopeless tone that many in this particular style strive for has been employed well here, and even allows for some breaks into groove (see “I, descend”) without losing that feeling of suffocating darkness. In fact, many of these sections are damn heavy, and resonance further with the listener in providing a sense of isolation.

The apex combination of “I Descend” and “I Ascend” is probably the most complete example of what unique vision Mære bring to this debut EP and why I am excited to hear how their sound develops over time. ‘I’ may appear nightmarish by way of its discordant pulses and harrowing death metal sounds but the theme of this introductory release aims to devour ego and reach a unified transcendental headspace.

The album description mentions an “emotional apex.” That’s really the difference between Stare and the band’s previous albums. Ulcerate was always supremely technically proficient. I just didn’t care all that much. Their growth has come from making music you will feel. Metallurgical Fire
